Tools you'll need
- Socket or wrench for drain plug
- Oil filter wrench
- Drain pan
- Funnel
- Gloves and rags
Step-by-step
- 1
Warm the engine slightly
Run the engine for two minutes so the oil flows easily, then shut it off. Hot oil can burn, so let it sit a few minutes before draining.
- 2
Drain the old oil
Place the drain pan under the oil pan and remove the drain plug. Let the oil drain completely, then reinstall the plug with a new crush washer.
- 3
Replace the filter
Unscrew the old filter. Rub a thin film of new oil on the gasket of the new filter and hand-tighten it plus a quarter turn.
- 4
Add new oil
Remove the oil fill cap and pour in the amount your owner’s manual specifies, usually 4.5-5 quarts.
- 5
Check the level and for leaks
Start the engine for 30 seconds, shut it off, wait one minute, and check the dipstick. Top up as needed and look under the car for drips.
